About Dnepropetrovsk city

Dnepropetrovsk (Dnipropetrovsk – in Ukrainian, or just Dnepr how the local dwellers call it) is situated in the average flow of the Dnieper river in central Ukraine. Population 1,028 million people (april 2008). The centre of the Dnepropetrovsk’s agglomeration (Dnepropetrovsk, Dneprozderzhinsk, Novomoskovsk, Podgorodnoye) – more than 1,3 million dwellers. A brief history
The constant fortified urban settlements are known from the middle of 16th century. A new city was found in 1776 by grand duke Grigoriy Potemkin according to the order of Ekaterina II and it was called Ekaterinoslav (it was so called in 1776 – 1926). In 1918 the city was called Sicheslav in honour of Cossacks’ Sech. Since 1926 – Dnepropetrovsk. Since the beginning of XXth century till today yhe city is the most important centre of metallurgical industry and mechanical engineering. Since 1950th it is a centre of aerospace and rocket building. The city is the important industrial and commercial centre of Eastern Ukraine.

There are 11 public Universities and several private ones, National University in the city. Museums: Historical, Art, Literal and others. Since 1995 underground is working. The international airport.
